I recently had the pleasure of presenting Stakeholder Management In a Crisis: Lessons From a Crisis Communicator at Bsides Bloomington. This talk shares lessons I learned as a crisis communicator and search-and-rescue volunteer, in the form of a single mental model for managing stakeholders during cybersecurity incident response.

Move consistently and clearly in the direction of your priorities.

If you know, you know. Most cybersecurity folks have had that moment where they knew how to solve a problem, but non-technical stakeholders were getting in the way. We talked about making sure the right stakeholders are at the table, setting expectations, preventing panic, and ensuring forward progress. We also talked about preparing for incidents ahead of time, and laying the groundwork for great communication during incident response.

Thanks to all who attended! I really appreciated the discussion and especially the insightful questions.

For those who attended my other talk, Securing the Weird, at Bsides: slides from that talk will go up next Tuesday. <insert mumbling about content calendars>
